First Baptist Church of Verrettville was founded by Rev Samual Smith. Rev Smith was born into slavery at the Proctor Plantation (now the area of Shell Beach). He escaped when New Orleans was captured and joined the cavalry for the Union. After the Civil War, he founded the church. His direct descendant, Reverend Raymond A. Smith leads the church today.

Sunrise/Sunset and Alpha/Omega are popular ways to denote birth and death dates. Verrettville markers often have Bible passages or references, like the beautiful “I’m not going to let no rock cry out for me.”
